Sharing a border with Mexico, Texas is one of the largest U.S. states featuring several major cities, large ranches, and rugged plains. This state has more farmland, heads of cattle, and wool produced than any other state. With its well-known cuisines (barbeque and Tex-Mex), cowboy fashions, and live music concerts, Texas offers residents an American southwestern experience. NYU Lutheran Dental Medicine’s health center partners in Texas are: 1) Centro de Salud Familiar La Fe, Inc. which serves primarily the indigent Hispanic community of El Paso County, 2) Heart of Texas Community Health Center which is a major Medicaid provider in McLennan County serving primarily children and pregnant women and 3) Community Dental Care in Dallas which has been providing high quality dental care and education to low-income families for over fifty years. In 2013, 17.5% of people in Texas had incomes below the poverty line ($23,834 for a family of four) and 38.4% of people under age 65 and below 138% of the poverty line did not have health insurance. NYU Lutheran Dental Medicine and its health center partners help to ensure equitable and affordable dental care while enhancing and honing the skills of postdoctoral dental practitioners.
