El Rio Health Center is the 13th largest Community Health Center in the nation. In 2016, El Rio provided 375,000 patient care visits to 95,000 patients at its combined 16 clinical sites throughout the city of Tucson, and employs over 1,100 employees. The Dental Department provided 55,000 dental visits to 25,000 patients at its three dental office locations, which have 47 dental operatories combined.
El Rio has a vibrant and active Dental Public Health Department (DPHD) which is unique for a community health center. The DPHD coordinates outreach events in the community, supervises and facilitates dental research by the dental residents and public health interns, performs patient care management for special populations, and oversees integrative programs for the health center.
El Rio is a leader in health education and participates in many training programs including the training of 2nd, 3rd and 4th year medical students from A.T. Stills University, Family Medicine Residents for the Wright Center, clinical pharmacy students for the University of Arizona, as well as AEGD and Pediatric Dental Residents from NYU-Langone Medical Center.
A Dental Public Health Resident who chooses to participate in a DPH residency at El Rio can count on participating in a well-structured program that will teach the practical applications of population health management concepts in a real world setting from the perspective of a community health center. A research project will be agreed upon based on the needs of the health center and the interests of the resident. The resident will also learn the principles of managing a complex community health center dental practice with multiple residency programs, integrative health initiatives and research projects.
El Rio can provide a resident in Dental Public Health a World-Class experience due to the expertise and experience of the supervising staff in its Dental Public Health Department as well its innovative approach to integrating population health principles into its health care delivery systems.
