California- Camerena Health- AEGD

Established in 1980, Camarena Health is the largest provider of primary care including medical and dental care to the residents of California’s north-central valley of Madera County. The primary mission of the centers, located in Madera and Chowchilla, is to provide comprehensive primary care while promoting healthy behavior patient education and patient well-being. Patients are referred by public schools, farm labor agencies, private practitioners, advocacy organizations and through word of mouth. Camarena Health has a robust department of community outreach and development which outreaches to the community and provides valuable health and service information. Within this department, a well-established Promotora Program exists in which volunteers provide outreach and education to community members in which other traditional means of outreach may not have been successful. Approximately 41% of Camarena Health patients are at or below the poverty line. Approximately 20% of Camarena Health’s patients are uninsured; 61% are Medicaid/Medi-Cal; 8% are Medicare; and 11% are private insurance. Established in 1980, the health center serves a diversified patient base of valley residents in Madera County. In 2014, Camarena Health served over 26,290 patients and realized over 112,047 clinical encounters. Camarena Health’s patient population base is comprised of 81% Hispanic, 16% White and 3% other ethnicities. Nearly half of the patient population is Spanish-speaking and work as migrant/seasonal farm workers. Infants and children represent 35% of the patient population. NYU Langone Dental Medicine residents can expect to become experienced and proficient in crowns and bridges, endodontics, crown lengthening, and prosthetic services by treating over 26,000 dental visits with a patient population base of 7,812. Camarena Health’s “A” Street location (Madera) services a higher percentage of pediatric patients than does the Chowchilla location with over 65% of its patients aged 18 years old or younger. Although this site sees a large number of children, the dental providers located at “A” Street gain experience in adult dentistry including periodontal maintenance, oral surgery, etc. The Chowchilla site services more adult patients with higher prosthetic, endodontics/oral surgery services although this site does service pediatric patients as well.
