Established in 1988. Shasta Community Health Center (SCHC) is a private-non-profit federally qualified health center (FQHC). It is ranked in the top 1% of all community health clinics in the United States. SCHC employs 350 health professionals in five locations across Shasta County. Dental services began in 1998 with the AEGD accreditation program starting in 2008. Our National Health Service Core (NHSC) HPSA score is 24 out of 26. You may have an opportunity for a NHSC Scholar loan repayment of $25,000 and your AEGD year counts toward the service commitment.
Clinic hours are Monday – Friday 8 am to 5 pm with no evenings, weekends, or after hour calls for AEGD residents. This is a dentist friendly environment with 7 staff dentists to help mentor your clinical experience. Our staff dentists are on faculty at UC San Francisco, Western University in Pomona CA, and AT Still University in Mesa, AZ. We are an Extern Site for fourth year dental students from AT Still University. Our focus here is on General Dentistry. Our patient population includes children under 21 years old (45%); 70% insured with Medi-Cal (Medicaid) and we offer a low income sliding fee discount program for our uninsured patients. Patients receive a broad range of general dentistry services including preventative, restorative, oral surgery, endodontic, and prosthodontic care excluding orthodontics, implants, and cosmetic dentistry. As an FQHC there is no pressure to “sell” treatment plans. We are an encounter based service with a mission to serve the underserved in our community.

Residents will complete rotations and work at all three dental centers a minimum of 1 day per week. Having medical services in our organization we can offer the optional observational medical rotation. We have a Special Oral Health Improvement Program (SOHIP) that treats the developmental disabled population in the 9 counties of the North State. This SOHIP department also provided hospital dentistry under general anesthesia at the local community hospital of which we can offer you an optional observational rotation. We have local specialist’s in Periodontics/Implant, Pedodontics, Endodontics, and Oral Surgery practices that host observation rotations as well. Lastly, we have times each week set aside to provide free dental services to the Homeless and we participate in many health events in the community.
